54 Thrones

54 Thrones is an African-inspired clean beauty brand whose name represents Africa's 54 countries. Founder Christina Funke Tegbe launched it in 2015, leaving a career in corporate consulting to build an African beauty brand inspired by the richness and cultures of the continent. Born and raised in Austin, Texas, she grew up exposed to West African beauty customs, with an aunt who frequently sent shea butter from Nigeria, a practice that resumed when Tegbe's mother was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015. The company sources shea from Ghana and Uganda, baobab oil from Nigeria, argan from Morocco, marula from South Africa, and jasmine and neroli from Egypt. It's the first Black-owned African-inspired beauty brand sold at Sephora. Discovery angle: a 'trade, not aid' model with direct cooperative sourcing. Caveat: more of a body-care than complexion line, and increasingly mainstream rather than obscure.
