Aviela is a Ghanaian-rooted, UK-made shea butter specialist with an origin story that's almost too sweet to be true. Owner Patricia Monney was struggling with a sore ankle while traveling on holiday to Ghana; when a local doctor suggested she rub unrefined, raw shea butter on the injury, Aviela was born, and Monney moved forward researching shea's anti-inflammatory properties. Founded by Patricia Monney in 2008, the brand has its roots in Ghana and is made in the UK. The deep-skin relevance is in the ingredient integrity: Aviela uses ethically sourced, 100% pure, highest grade, unrefined shea butter sourced directly from a Women's Cooperative in Northern Ghana, and unlike many unrefined shea products that drag on the skin, Aviela's have a sumptuously light, whipped texture. Shea is a cornerstone ingredient for richly melanated skin prone to dryness and inflammatory conditions. The brand has scaled thoughtfully, Aviela's shea products are now widely distributed across Whole Foods Market stores in the UK, while keeping its women-led, ethical cooperative model intact.
