Salwa Petersen, now rebranded as Chéribé, is a prestige brand born from the Chadian Chébé ritual, in which women treat and grow their famously long hair using the powdered seed of an indigenous shrub layered with shea butter and sesame oil. Founder Salwa Petersen, a Harvard Law graduate and former L'Oréal product developer who grew up partly in northern Chad, spent over three years creating the first modern Chébé extract, building the supply chain herself and paying women in her home country three times the standard wage, with 2% of proceeds going to African Parks conservation and women's literacy projects. While the line is hair-focused, it sits squarely in the African oil/butter heritage tradition and serves Black, textured-hair and melanin-rich communities at a genuinely luxury price point and global retail footprint (The Detox Market, Amazon, specialty clean-beauty shops).
