House of Tara International

House of Tara is the matriarch of indigenous Nigerian beauty. Tara Fela-Durotoye, a trained lawyer, launched House of Tara in 1998, beginning her mission to redefine beauty standards in Africa. A pioneer of bridal makeup in Nigeria, she launched the first bridal directory in 1999 and established the country's first makeup school. The deep-skin relevance is central to its origin: Tara noticed that most imported foundations and powders didn't cater to the undertones of African skin, so she developed Nigeria's first locally formulated foundation range specifically for melanin-rich tones. A charming heritage touch: its lipstick names were inspired by local markets, Sabo, Jankara and Tejuosho. The brand now spans foundations, powders, lipsticks, fragrances and skincare, and its Beauty Entrepreneur scheme has set up over 15,000 women in their own beauty businesses. Less an obscure gem than a movement, but essential for coverage and a genuine deep-skin pioneer.
