Black Opal Beauty

Founded by Niko Mouyiaris and Dr. Cheryl Burgess (orig.); Desiree Rogers and Cheryl Mayberry-McKissack (current owners)

Black Opal (stylized BLK/OPL) is a deep-skin heritage brand that predates the Fenty era by decades. Niko Mouyiaris and Dr. Cheryl Burgess worked together in 1994 to provide better product options for Black women in a space where they were lacking. In 2019, now-CEO Desiree Rogers and President Cheryl Mayberry-McKissack bought Black Opal, making the company Black and woman-owned for the first time. The entire catalogue is engineered for melanin. BLK/OPL is a Black-owned makeup brand offering foundations, primer, concealer, powder and color cosmetics designed to enhance the natural radiance of deeper tones. Its products are crafted to help reduce hyperpigmentation, control oiliness, and minimize the appearance of enlarged pores. The True Color Stick Foundation and finishing powder are longtime community staples. The discovery angle is value: this is one of the most affordable, widely accessible deep-tone-first lines. Caveat: the original co-founders weren't Black, though the brand is now fully Black woman-owned.
