Hue Noir
Founded by Paula Hayes

Hue Noir is a chemist-founded indie that quietly predates the post-Fenty wave. It was founded in 2009 by chemist Paula Hayes, who was inspired by the challenge of finding products for her own complexion and wanted to combine science and technology to create innovative products catering to darker skin tones. Since its inception in 2009 the brand has been dedicated to equitable beauty solutions for people of color, and is proudly Black and woman-owned, formulated and manufactured at its Portland, Oregon-area facility. The True Hues Flawless Finish Foundation line includes 25 shades with oil-control properties for oily and combination skin. Hayes positions it as a luxury brand at an affordable price point, meaning her cosmetics contain the same ingredients as higher-priced brands. Honest caveat: one reviewer found the shades skewed yellow/olive, making neutral matches harder. Still, a true hidden gem with deep STEM credibility and a long track record.
