Kilali Cosmetics

Kilali Cosmetics was created to solve a specific, persistent gap: nude lip shades that actually read on deep skin. Founder Tope Adubi noticed the lack of foundation shades for dark skin tones and the absence of nude lip stains that matched our skin tones. She found the undertone of available nudes was either too white or too pink, which automatically left out a huge section of make-up users. The brand launched in Nigeria and scaled internationally. Kilali Cosmetics launched with a goal to create inclusive quality makeup while infusing the knowledge of Africa and sharing the beauty within the continent's 54 countries. Its signature products are long-wearing and culturally rooted: it currently has 12 shades of matte lip stains that are 18-hour wears, do not get clumpy and are smudge-free, all named after heroines, monuments, and names of Africans. Featured in Who What Wear UK's Black-owned roundup, it now also spans skincare with an African black soap cleanser. A genuinely obscure, affordable indie with deep-skin nudes at its heart.
