Fashion Fair Cosmetics

Fashion Fair is the trailblazing heritage house that essentially invented the national deep-skin makeup category. First launched in 1973 by Eunice Johnson, wife of Johnson Publishing CEO John H. Johnson, Fashion Fair was the first national makeup line formulated specifically for Black women, with a broad, rich shade range impossible to find at the time. They started by hiring a chemist to make shades of foundation and lipstick that looked good on darker skin. After bankruptcy, it returned under Black women's ownership. Cheryl Mayberry McKissack and Desiree Rogers bought the company out of bankruptcy in November 2019 for $1.85 million and ushered it into its next chapter. The relaunched collection, now vegan and cruelty-free, includes foundation, powder, priming serum and former bestselling lipstick shades. Black owned and founded, Fashion Fair has elevated deeper skin tones since 1973. The discovery angle is legacy meeting modern clean formulation, now sold at Sephora. Caveat: reformulated for FDA compliance, so beloved originals differ slightly.
