Epara Skincare
Founded by Ozohu Adoh
Epara is a London-based luxury skincare line founded by Nigerian-born Ozohu Adoh, an Oxford MBA and former strategy advisor who turned to beauty after years of struggling with a misdiagnosed skin condition. Before Epara's conception, Adoh had struggled with a frequently misdiagnosed skin condition for several years despite getting examined by a handful of skin experts; she eventually found she had follicular eczema, which may present differently on darker skin. The name itself is meaningful: Epara means "to cocoon oneself" in Ebira, one of the many languages spoken in Nigeria. What sets Epara apart for deep skin is its targeted approach to pigmentation. Key actives that address hyperpigmentation are licorice root extract and plankton extract; the plankton extract in particular acts to address just the areas where hyperpigmentation has occurred, without changing the basal melanin levels of unaffected areas. This means brightening without the skin-lightening effect common in products marketed to women of colour. It's a discovery gem: prestige-priced, stocked at Harrods, but still relatively under-the-radar versus mass brands.
