The Lip Bar

The Lip Bar

The Lip Bar is the Detroit-rooted vegan beauty brand that began in founder Melissa Butler's Brooklyn kitchen. Fed up with the toxic one-shade-fits-most beauty industry, the self-made CEO turned her frustration into action, stepping off the corporate ladder and into her kitchen to whip up vibrant vegan lipstick. In 2015, Butler appeared on Shark Tank to pitch a mobile version of The Lip Bar; she was rejected by all five judges, who referred to the products as "colorful cockroaches." She turned that exposure into a retail empire. The brand has grown to more than 2,000 stores since launching in 2011, including a flagship in downtown Detroit and presence at Walmart, CVS, and Target. For deep skin, the angle is that complexion products are formulated deep-first; the line now spans tinted skin conditioner, serum foundation, and the well-reviewed Caffeine Concealer. The honest caveat: the brand publicly noted sales pressure tied to the 2025 Target boycott, so availability in some stores can fluctuate, DTC and Amazon remain reliable.
