Flesh Beauty

Flesh was Allure founding editor Linda Wells's project to literally redefine 'flesh color.' Wells noted writers would describe something as 'flesh color' and she'd push back, pointing to the old Crayola crayon and paint shades still labeled 'flesh' or 'nude' as a peachy-beige, wanting flesh color to mean every color of skin. The brand's foundation, the Firm Flesh Thickstick, is a medium-coverage dewy stick in 40 shades 'from the palest pale to the darkest dark.' The darkest shades were the hardest to figure out because they tend to turn ashy, so the team reformulated those entirely. Though incubated at Revlon, Wells described it as 'an indie brand within the company,' working with separate vendors and her own makeup artist. Major caveat: Wells left Revlon in 2019 and the brand's current status is uncertain, verify availability before recommending.
