Cay Skin

Cay Skin is an inclusive suncare brand founded in 2022 by Jamaican-Canadian supermodel and vitiligo advocate Winnie Harlow, named for the cays of Jamaica where she spent her summers. The founding story is visceral: during a 2018 Bahamas beach shoot, Harlow was asked to skip sunscreen to avoid the blue, silver and purple casts traditional SPF left on her brown skin, and ended up with a severe sunburn that required medical care and permanently altered her vitiligo pattern, prompting her "no more compromises" mission. Drawing on traditional Jamaican remedies and modern SPF filters, Cay Skin blends skincare with sun protection for "everyone under the sun": lightweight, vegan, reef-safe, silicone-free formulas like the Isle Glow Face Lotion SPF 45 and Mo'Bay Mineral Drops, packed with sea moss and Kakadu plum. Backed by a $6.5M seed round and sold via Sephora globally, it directly addresses the white-cast problem that has excluded deep skin from sun care. Caveat: it's a celebrity-incubator brand (with 100.co), so less indie than founder-led.
