Caribé
Founded by Phoebe Ellis (co-founder)

Caribé is a UK-based self-tanning indie founded specifically to serve melanin-rich skin, a category long built around, in its co-founder's words, 'white, skinny blondes on a beach.' Co-founder Phoebe Ellis told Business of Fashion there's 'a lot of tokenism' in tanning: 'Black women get put in campaigns, but the product isn't made for us and doesn't work for our skin tone.' Ellis recalled that growing up in the UK, she and her co-founder routinely saw the mood-boosting properties their white peers reported after self-tanning, while feeling the space was one 'no one thought Black women could also do.' Caribé offers two products designed for darker skin: Deep C60 for reddish undertones and Medium C94 for olive undertones, with the brand noting that further along the melanin scale customers tend to have more red undertones. Alongside Isle of Paradise, Caribé is cited as an indie formulating self-tanner specifically for melanin-rich skin, filling shade-range gaps left by legacy players. A true discovery gem in an underserved category. Caveat: confirm exact launch year and stockists.
