Buttah Skin is one of the most established Black-founded skincare lines built explicitly for melanin-rich complexions. It provides nature-and-science skincare for both women and men formulated to reveal more radiant results for those with melanin-rich skin, and is unusual in the space for being founded by a man, Dorion Renaud. A model and actor, Renaud's fruitless search for products that addressed his skin ended when he discovered raw, organic shea, whose transformational properties inspired him to create Buttah. The brand launched in 2018 with three products, Facial Shea Butter, Vitamin C Serum and Cleanser. The discovery angle is the clinical backbone: in 2020 a third-party lab evaluated 36 men and women of mixed ethnicities and Fitzpatrick skin types IV-VI, concluding the products improve brightness and skin tone evenness in melanin-rich skin. The line is gender-neutral and direct-to-consumer led, with broad retail availability now.
